Theatre 33, in residence at Willamette University, is a new play development company that helps Oregon/NW playwrights develop their new scripts from our 60-hour rehearsed workshop production (fully designed lights, sound, props, set, costumes, entirely blocked with scripts in hand), to a world premiere full production. We are Oregon-centric, as evidenced by our name. Oregon was the 33rd state to join the union.
Beginning our 11th season, we have produced 44 new plays by 34 different Playwrights (24 Oregonians), 11 featuring Oregon/Northwest themes.
- Last year we provided 13 full scholarships for our High School Playwriting Course to rural/underserved students from all over Oregon. We offered 22 paid university theatre student internships in all phases of theatre production.
- Our admission fee is donation-based to accommodate youth, lower-income patrons, and underserved communities.
- We offer a nurturing, collaborative atmosphere to help authors refine their new scripts. We lodge playwrights in Salem so they can attend rehearsals, engage in rewrites with the assistance of a company dramaturg and attend all performances with audience talkbacks. All of this valuable feedback from audiences and professional artists either finalize the script or move it closer to completion. 12 of our produced plays have been world premiered by other companies in 9 cities nationwide.
